This volume analyzes the recent trend of popular culture, which de-historizises the fascist aesthetic as Nazi Chic and Nazi Trash and in this way draws a macabre as well as an enjoyable image of a destructive epoch. In doing so, it is significant to note how Nazi Chic already established itself in national-socialist self-expression as well as in allied propaganda during the second World War, to finally find its way into popular culture as a variation of the 'gothic villain', of the fascinating evil. Nowadays, it is to be found in comics and films, in stage shows and media art. As the historic distance grows, it becomes harder to claim ethical responsibility in the handling of the actual evil. And many tendencies of Nazi Chic understand themselves as almost decoupled from the historic sources. Dr. Stiglegger’s book references and builds on the seminal works of historian Saul Friedländer, author Susan Sontag, philosopher Michel Foucault, while updating their pioneering research for the 21st century.
